Johnson's Creek Fishing Day 3

June 22nd was our third day staying at Johnson's Creek, ID.  We left early and flew into Moose Creek Airstrip so I could fish the confluence of the Selway and Moose Creek Rivers.  They were amazing!  Big, deep, clear rives with lots of uneducated Cutthroats.  It was fun!  We ran into a problem while there.  As I was getting ready to fish, Dad noticed oil dripping from the airplane motor.  That's always bad when you are in the middle of the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho.  The good news is that an attendant was stationed at the Moose Creek Rangers Station next to the airstrip.  Dad called a mechanic in Hamilton, MT on a satellite phone, and spent the day figuring out how to get us out of there.  I fished.  It was great fishing.  That evening we flew across the snow-capped Continental Divide with the engine leaking oil as we went.  We flew to Hamilton and spent the night there, though all of our gear was back at Johnson's Creek.  The next morning the mechanics fixed the oil leak while I visited all four fly shops.  We left about noon, flew to Johnson's Creek, packed up, and then headed to McCall, ID.  After getting fuel there, we flew back to Salt Lake City.  What an amazing trip!  The link has the GoPro video with some images of the trip below.

June 21st we flew from Johnson's Creek Airstrip to Big Creek Airstrip for a fly in breakfast.  We departed their and flew to Moose Creek Airstrip where the Selway and Moose Creek Rivers join.  We toured the area, then flew back to Johnson's Creek where I fished the afternoon.  I caught three small trout on a soft hackle rig in a slow pool.  The river was swift and deep.  Even with a spinner, I could not connect with fish of any size.  Needless to say, there was more flying than fishing this day.  I hope you still enjoy the GoPro video and pictures below.

Idaho Flying and Fishing Day 1

June 20th my Dad and I flew to Johnson's Creek Forestry Airstrip, Idaho in his Cessna 182 Skylane.  Cub Crafters was hosting a fly in there, and I was hitching a ride to fish the Middle Fork of the Salmon in a section only accessible by airplane or raft.  The fishing was great, and the Salmon Flies were huge!  The SPOT image below shows where we traveled.  The GoPro video is in the link below.  Enjoy the pics from the trip.  Days two and three will follow soon.

Early Morning Rainbows on Deer Creek June 7th, 2014

Saturday, June 7th at dawn saw me, Mortensen, and an undisclosed mini-Mortensen--he would not sign the blog waiver for public viewing--on Deer Creek Reservoir. The Rainbows were running a little deeper in the SPOT patter image below.  We were picking them up between 30-40 feet of water on pop gear weighted with 3/4 to 1.5oz. egg sinkers.  The water temperature was between 60-63F and the fishing was hot.  By 11AM all three of us had our limit of four nice fat Bows!  Below is the video and some images.  Enjoy!

Deer Creek Rainbow Fest

During my off-Friday, the Rainbows were "on"!  A friend from work and I went early to Deer Creek.  We followed the path shown on the SPOT map below and each limited.  Well, actually the guy I was fishing with caught six and I caught two.  Still, it was fantastic fishing!  We got on the water at 6:30am and we were done by 11am.  My friend was using a Rainbow Panther Martin with about 1/2oz weight.  I tried about everything in my tackle box, but caught one on the same size number two brown trout crank bait.  I caught the other one on a purple body, red blade spinner weighted with a 1/2oz egg sinker.  The fish were hanging in the line on the SPOT map at about 20-40ft.  The water temperature was 56-58F.

Mother's Day Caddis Hatch on the Middle Provo

I took a solo trip on Friday, May 16th to the Middle Provo after work.  I hit a prolific Mother's Day Caddis hatch.  Fish were flying out of the water all around me.  It was fun to watch.  I caught three, landed two, and missed two others.  I fished just downstream from the Legacy Bridge outside of Heber. The SPOT tracker shows the general vicinity. Despite the community pond feel from all the fishing pressure there, it was still a good time.  I made a quick GoPro video in the link below.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Running Against the Strawberry Wind

May 10th, 2014 we took the much anticipated trip to Strawberry to fish as the ice was receding from the shore. Turns out, there was just one small problem:  THERE WAS NO ICE!  Apparently, the Department of Wasted Resources (DWR) has a very loose definition of "receding ice".  Despite that, the cold wind, and the threat of rain/snow, we had fun in the beautiful outdoors.  We even caught fish.  Mortensen landed a nice 15" Cutthroat.  There were two mini-Mortensen's with us this time as well.  Adeline and Isaac joined this expedition.  Isaac had a fish on, but he escaped.  He also tested his arm strength tossing rocks in the lake, right by Dad!  Adeline hunted down numerous crayfish exoskeletons between snaking on cookies and dried mangoes.  I ran the GoPro camera, but never seemed to get the timing just right, even for the three fish I hooked, but couldn't land.
